Welcome | Sevalayam Boys Hostel

WELCOME TO OUR COMMUNITY

Sevalayam Boys Hostel provides more than just a room; it offers a nurturing environment that fosters growth, discipline, and a strong sense of brotherhood among students. Here, individuals are guided to build strong character, develop responsibility, and maintain a focused approach toward their education. The structured and supportive atmosphere helps students stay motivated and consistent in their academic journey. At the same time, they are encouraged to form meaningful relationships based on trust and mutual respect. These experiences shape them into confident individuals and create lifelong friendships that extend beyond their years at the hostel.

Historical Foundation & Social Vision

In 1932, under British rule, Mahatma Gandhi was deeply concerned about the future of India after independence. He believed that without proper education, citizens would not be prepared to govern and guide the nation. During that time, the Harijan community faced social discrimination, and their education was considered a taboo due to the widespread practice of untouchability.

To eradicate such inequalities, Gandhi emphasized the importance of education for all, along with providing children three meals a day to support their growth. He emphasized that educating every individual would prepare them to contribute meaningfully to the nation, especially in a self-governed India. With this vision, he established the Harijan Sevak Sangh in 1932. Its first president, G.D. Birla, generously contributed land for building hostels and schools, while the first secretary, Thakkar Bapa, dedicated his life and resources to social service.

Over time, this movement spread across states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh. In Tamil Nadu, the Sevalayam Boys Hostel was founded through the efforts of Vaidhiyanatha Iyer (Thennatu Gandhi) and N.M.R. Subbaraman (Madurai Gandhi). The name “Sevalayam” signifies that service itself is equal to worship.

Their guiding principle remains:
“Untouchability is a sin against both God and humanity.”

The Veranda Start

In 1932, the hostel began at the home of Mr. B.K. Ramachari and his brothers. They were devoted followers of Mahatma Gandhi who started this mission on their own household veranda before the Madurai Municipality granted the current 1/2 acre. This modest beginning highlights the strong commitment and vision behind the institution, showing how a small initiative rooted in service and dedication can grow into a place that transforms lives and supports education for generations.

Historical Support

Building this sanctuary was a community effort. Records from the archive show that the sons of T.V. Sundaram Iyengar (TVS) contributed ₹6,000 to the early construction, alongside the tireless work of N.M.R. Subbaraman. Their generous support and continuous involvement reflect the collective spirit that helped establish this hostel, making it a symbol of unity and shared responsibility toward education and social welfare.

90 Years of Dedicated Service

Established in 1938, Sevalayam Boys Hostel was born from the vision of Mahatma Gandhi and the selfless service of the Harijan Sevak Sangh. What began on a humble household veranda has grown into a historic institution that has shaped the lives of thousands. Over the years, it has consistently provided students with a safe, disciplined, and encouraging environment that supports both academic excellence and personal development, making it a cornerstone of opportunity for many young minds.

Our legacy is etched in history—from the 1938 foundation stone laid by Rajaji to our leadership in the 1939 Temple Entry Movement. Today, we continue to provide a sanctuary of education and discipline under the guidance of Mr. R.Srinivasan. The institution stands as a symbol of tradition and progress, maintaining its core values while adapting to modern educational needs to ensure every student is prepared for a successful future.
